Why Snow Chains Are Important for Winter Road Safety

Driving on snow-covered and icy roads can be risky without proper equipment. Snow chains significantly improve tyre traction, helping vehicles maintain grip while braking, turning, and climbing steep slopes. Even four-wheel-drive vehicles can skid in heavy snow, which makes snow chains a crucial safety tool for winter travel in mountainous regions.

For anyone planning to visit hill stations during snowfall, carrying snow chains is not just recommended—it is often essential.

  • Government Regulations: Snow Chain Mandatory Areas in India

To ensure public safety during winter conditions, authorities enforce the use of snow chains on many high-altitude roads.

  • Snow Chain Mandatory States:
    • Himachal Pradesh
    • Jammu & Kashmir
    • Uttarakhand
    • Ladakh
    • Selected routes in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh

  • Important Passes & Routes:
    • Rohtang Pass
    • Atal Tunnel (Manali–Leh route)
    • Zoji La Pass
    • Kunzum Pass
    • Gulmarg and Sonmarg roads
    • Narkanda, Kufri, and Kalpa regions

Vehicles without snow chains may be stopped or denied entry during heavy snowfall.

  • Types of Snow Chains & Their Reusability

1.Reusable Snow Chains:
• Metal ladder-style chains ( Its takes too much time for installation & car jeck also required)
• Diamond-pattern chains
• Heavy-duty square-link chains ( need to remove tyre and then we can install it)

These options are durable, long-lasting, and suitable for deep snow and icy mountain roads.

  1. Limited-Use / Non-Reusable Options:
    • Fabric snow socks (wear out quickly)
    • Light cable chains (effective only in mild snow)

For Indian hill terrain, metal snow chains are the most reliable and reusable solution.

Snowchains prices start from 1500 per tyre to 5000 per tyre. What’s the difference and what do you recommend? As I assume that now snowchains will be compulsory if you are driving to snowy regions.

Snowchains comes in lot of variants.

Best ones are those which can be installed without removing tyres, installs in less than a minute, works on black ice and is reusable. These are made from hardened carbon steel and are expensive cause of its design and efficiency.

We recommend see the area you are traveling to and whether you want one time which ranges from 1500 or a durable like #bkrsnowchains

Plastic ones which are cheaper does not work on black ice and have risk or breaking due to traction.

Choose as per your vehicle and your safety.
