Why my basil leaves are turning purple, I am not even growing the Purple basil variety?
Purple basil leaves usually appears due to one of these causes:
-
Deficiency of Phosphorus: Most common reason for green basil turning purple is phosphorus deficiency. This is especially occurs in cooler weather or poor soil. Use a balanced fertilizer containing phosphorus. You can also try bone meal for a natural boost.
-
Cold Stress: Basil dislike temperatures below 10°C. Cold can interfere with nutrient uptake. Move your plant indoors to keep it warm.
-
Variety Mix-Up: Check the seed packet or tag for variety information, it might be a mix or hybrid that naturally shows purple coloring.
-
Imbalance of pH: Basil generally prefers pH between 6 to 7. If the soil is too alkaline, phosphorus becomes less available. Test the soil pH and amend with sulfur or peat moss.
