Treating Black Mold on Strawberry

My strawberries are affected by black mold, how can I treat this disease?

Rhizopus stolonifer is the causing fungus of Black mold in strawberries is usually thrives in warm and humid climate. The berries which are affected by this disease develop black, elongated, depressed lesions on stolon and flower stalk. Here’s a guide to help you treat it:

  1. Discard the Affected Berries – Immediately discard moldy strawberries to prevent the spreading of disease and do not compost them, as this fungus can re-appear.

  2. Air Circulation – If growing in pots or container, provide space to the plants and trim back excess leaves to allow better air circulation.

  3. Fungicide: Use organic options like neem oil or baking soda spray. You can also apply copper-based fungicides or vinegar solution both works well.

  4. Keep Plants Dry: Most of the fungal cells grow in moist environment so avoid overwatering and ensure your strawberries dry quickly after rain or watering.

  5. Mulching: Apply mulch like straw to help keep berries off damp soil, preventing fungal disease.
