How can I implement seed plot technique to get healthy potato seeds?
The seed plot technique is widely used technique in india and other tropical regions. This method is developed primarily to produce healthy potato seed tubers especially during low aphid population, which reduces the risk of viral infections. Here’s step by step guide to help you:
-
Site Selection: Choose the location with low aphid population and well-drained soil with good fertility.
-
Land Preparation: Apply deep ploughing followed by harrowing to make fine tilth. Add well-rotted FYM or compost before final ploughing.
-
Seed Selection: Use certified disease-free tubers of the desired variety.
-
Planting: Time: Ideal planting time is October to first week of January. Keep spacing 60 cm between rows and 20 to 25 cm between plants. Slightly irrigate after planting if the soil is dry.
-
Management: Apply a balanced fertilizer dose like NPK. Use mulching to encourage tuber formation.
-
Monitoring: Monitor regularly for aphid population.
Once it approaches 20 aphids per 100 compound leaves, haulm cutting must be done. -
Dehaulming: Cut the potato plant haulms (shoots) just above the soil level. This stops the transmission of viruses by aphids.
-
Harvesting: Wait for 10 to 15 days after haulm cutting, this allow the tuber skin to harden. Harvest carefully to avoid bruising or damage.
-
Storage: Store the seed tubers in a cool, well ventilated space. Regularly check for rot or sprouting.
