Controlling Moisture Content in Plants

How can I control moisture content in my plants?

A good moisture level is crucial, especially for container gardening for general plant function. Here are some ways to regulate moisture levels in plants:

  1. Choose the Right Soil: Use well-draining potting mix with perlite, vermiculite, or sand. Don’t use garden soil, as it compacts in pots and retains too much water.

  2. Choose the Right Containers: Choose pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. You can use self-watering pots.

  3. Mulching: Adding a layer of mulch on top of the soil helps in maintaining consistent soil temperature and prevents rapid drying.

  4. Watering: Check moisture of the soil using moisture meter, if dry, water and if damp, wait. Use a drip irrigation system or self-watering pots to maintain even moisture. Water in the morning to reduce evaporation loss.

  5. Place Plants According to Water Need: Place plants with high moisture needs together. Keep drought-tolerant plants separate to avoid overwatering.
